Zaregoto is a series of Japanese web novels written by Nisio Isin and illustrated by Taking. Originally published in 2002, the novel has been updated with numerous series. The novel mainly comprises of genres like Comedy, Drama, Harem, Mystery, and Romance.
The novel’s plot revolves around “ I ”, the main protagonist of the story who gets into various encounters. Even though he tries to stay away from all of it, he is always dragged towards the middle of every chaos.
Akagami Iria, the exiled daughter of a powerful family, lives at the Wet Crow’s Feather Island. She was cut-off by the Akagami Foundation which led to her losing the clan she once had.
Since then she’s been living with her maids. One day, Zaregoto decided to invite some of the great minds of Japan for a little get-together.
The guests come out to be Li-Chan and his best friend Kunagisa Tomo, who were invited other than the chefs and fortune tellers that came. In the middle of their party, a terrible murder is discovered on the island which stirs fear and shock to the locals.
During this, Li-Chan realizes that he has a certain power Zaregoto, to be able to discover who is real and who is wearing a disguise.
This is indeed a unique take on fantasy novels which is pretty rare in Japanese novels since most of them tend to follow the same generic story patterns.
